Action against Destiny-2000 after ministry, BB move: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said on Sunday that the government will take action against ‘Destiny-2000 Ltd’ if the commerce ministry and the central bank take moves against its alleged irregularities.
The finance minister said this while replying to journalists’ query on whether the government would act against the alleged irregularities of the multi level marketing (MLM) company which have been published in newspapers.

Muhith encountered journalists after emerging from a meeting with Pascal Lamy, director general of World Trade Organisation (WTO), at his office in the Secretariat on Sunday morning.
Several newspapers recently published reports on the company’s alleged involvement in several irregularities including illegal banking and collecting money from people through cheating.
Bangla daily Prothom Alo reported that Destiny-2000 Ltd is running bank without having any permission from Bangladesh Bank. The group is also involved in tree plantation on public land without permission from the authorities.
According to Destiny-2000 Ltd website, the company has 30 sister concerns in aviation, newspaper, TV, printing press, food, medical college and agro business.
About 3.6 million distributors have joined the company since its inception in December 2000, it says.
During the meeting with Pascal, the finance minister sought WTO’s cooperation in releasing trade finance from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund on easy condition.
At present, Bangladesh is getting trade finance from global money markets on high interest, the minister said, adding that the WTO chief assured him of extending cooperation in this regard.
Talking to journalists, Lamy said the WTO is working on finalising the framework of service sector. It will be placed before the next WTO ministerial conference for approval.
Once the framework is finalised, Bangladesh will be able to export more manpower to different countries, he said.
The Ministerial Conference is the WTO’s topmost decision-making body. It usually meets every two years. The last conference was held in Geneva during December 15-17, 2011.
